If you notice V-shaped cuts along the leaves of your coconut palm, it may be a sign of Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) damage.
These distinct triangular cuts are one of the most recognizable indicators that a palm has been attacked. Understanding why they appear can help property owners identify the problem early and take action before serious damage occurs.

Why Palm Leaves Develop V-Shaped Cuts
The Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle does not feed on open palm leaves the way many people assume.
Instead, the beetle bores into the crown of the palm tree, which is the center of the tree where new fronds are still developing. Inside the crown, the beetle feeds on the soft plant tissue and can damage the young leaves while they are still tightly folded.
As the fronds continue to grow and eventually unfold, the sections that were damaged inside the crown become visible. This damage appears as clean V-shaped cuts or triangular holes along the leaf.
Because the frond was injured before it opened, the pattern often appears evenly spaced along the leaf, making the V-shape one of the most recognizable signs of CRB activity.
In other words, the V-shaped cuts you see on the leaf are actually evidence of damage that happened earlier inside the crown of the tree.

Other Signs Of Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Damage
While V-shaped cuts are one of the easiest signs to recognize, there are several other indicators that a palm tree may have been attacked by CRB.
Holes In The Crown
One of the earliest warning signs is small holes in the crown of the palm where the beetle has bored into the tree.
Chewed Fibers Or Shredded Material
You may also notice chewed plant fibers or shredded material near the crown. This occurs as the beetle tunnels into the tree and pushes plant material outward.
Frass (Beetle Waste)
CRB activity may also produce frass, a mixture of plant debris and beetle waste that can sometimes be seen around the entry hole.
Heavy Crown Damage
In severe cases, repeated attacks can damage the growing point of the palm and may eventually weaken or kill the tree.

Why Early Detection Matters
Once V-shaped cuts appear on the leaves, the palm has already been attacked. While the tree may still survive, repeated CRB attacks can cause long-term damage.
Because CRB continues to spread across Hawaii, preventative protection is one of the best ways to protect valuable palms before serious damage occurs.
Preventative CRB Treatments For Palm Trees
Preventative palm injection treatments can help protect trees from Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle attacks. These treatments work from inside the tree, helping stop beetles before they cause significant damage to the crown.
If you are seeing V-shaped cuts, holes in the crown, or other signs of CRB, it may be time to have your trees inspected.
