FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We offer comprehensive tree services across Oahu, Hawaii.

When seeking tree services, consider quality, reliability, and experience. HTM Contractors has over 30 years in the industry, offering services from tree pruning to stump grinding. It’s essential to look for professional certifications, licenses, and a company with a robust safety program. Ensure the company has the correct insurance and is available to answer any related questions.

Our arborists are highly trained professionals who have obtained certifications from reputable organizations in the field, such as the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

They undergo rigorous training in all aspects of tree care, including safety procedures, tree biology, diagnosis of diseases, pest management, and proper pruning techniques.

Additionally, our team regularly participates in continuing education programs to stay updated with the latest advancements and best practices in arboriculture. This commitment to professional development ensures that we deliver the highest standard of service and expertise to our clients in Hawaii.

If your trees are not accessible by truck, we employ various specialized techniques and equipment to reach them.

This may include manual climbing methods and portable machinery, ensuring we can provide comprehensive tree care regardless of accessibility.

Our team is trained to handle these scenarios safely and efficiently, minimizing any impact on your property while delivering the same high-quality service.

Please contact us at 808-456-3311 to discuss the specific details of your situation, and we will devise a tailored approach to meet your needs.

Tree work is inherently risky and should be handled by a licensed professional. Liability insurance protects homeowners and their property, while workman’s compensation insurance safeguards tree professionals during work. Hiring a non-licensed or non-insured company can make you liable for damages or injuries. Always request proof of insurance and a valid contractor’s license before starting any work.

HTM Contractors prioritize property protection. We use protective materials over sensitive areas and have experienced teams skilled in various removal techniques, ensuring minimal landscape impact.

Reputable tree service companies such as HTM Contractors are insured. In the rare event of accidental damage, the company will work with you to ensure repairs or compensation.

Always inform your tree service provider about any pets or children. Most treatments are safe once dried, but it’s essential to keep pets and children away during the application and until the provider gives the all-clear.

In Hawaii, the solutions used for vascular injections to treat palm trees against the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) typically contain insecticides specifically approved for use in palms. These treatments include:

  1. Imidacloprid: This systemic insecticide acts as a neurotoxin to the beetles. It is absorbed by the tree and distributed throughout its tissue. The feeding beetles ingest it, which effectively reduces CRB infestation.

  2. Emamectin Benzoate: Known for its effectiveness against a variety of pests, including CRB, this systemic insecticide poisons the beetles as they feed on the tree’s tissues.

Our application of these insecticides through vascular injections ensures direct delivery into the tree’s system, maximizing effectiveness while minimizing environmental impact. Our team strictly adheres to the safest application practices to ensure the health and longevity of your palm trees. Please contact us for further details on our treatment protocols or to arrange for a professional consultation.

A healthy tree typically has vibrant foliage during its growth season and shows no signs of damage or disease. Regular inspections by a Certified Arborist can help spot potential issues. Trees displaying unusual signs, like premature leaf drop or discolored leaves, might need attention.

Regular tree inspections can prevent potential hazards and ensure the health of your trees. It’s recommended to have a professional arborist inspect your trees at least once a year, or after major weather events like storms or hurricanes.

Signs of disease or pest infestation include discolored leaves, holes in the bark, sawdust at the base, or unusual insect activity. If you notice any of these signs, contact a tree service professional immediately.

After a storm, check for broken or hanging branches, split trunks, or leaning trees. If you notice any of these signs, keep a safe distance and contact a tree service professional for an assessment.

Pruning is essential for safety, aesthetics, and tree health. Dead or broken branches can be hazardous. If branches grow too large or close to structures, they should be pruned to prevent damage. Pruning can also enhance a tree’s appearance and provide better views. Always use a Certified Arborist for pruning to avoid potential damage.

The time it takes to remove a tree depends on its size, location, and the surrounding environment. While smaller trees might take a few hours, larger or more complex removals can take a full day or more.

Always request detailed estimates from multiple providers. A reputable tree service company will provide transparent pricing, explaining the costs associated with each service.

TREE SHAPING ON OAHU

Tree shaping is a formal style of pruning. It takes precision and an understanding of the landscape design the tree is part of, because the goal is a tree that suits its setting and stays healthy, whether you want a clean formal look or a softer natural one.

Good shaping starts with a plan. Our arborists look at the species, how it responds to cutting in Hawaii’s climate, where it’s planted and the form it should have when it matures. The crew then makes the cuts that steer growth toward that form.

We shape trees and plants for:

  • Community associations that want a uniform look across common areas
  • Cemeteries and other formal grounds
  • Homeowners with a feature tree or ornamentals like crotons

Regular shaping heads off problems and keeps upkeep simple. A small, young tree can sometimes be shaped by its owner, but larger trees need specialized equipment and a trained crew. The photos show our tree shaping work at Punchbowl National Cemetery. Learn more in our tree shaping guide for property owners and associations.

TREE TRIMMING ON OAHU

Regular trimming keeps a tree healthy, safe and good looking. Proper pruning preserves the tree’s natural form, encourages healthy growth and takes out problem branches before they become hazards, which helps the tree live a long life.

It’s time for a trim when you notice:

  • Dead, broken or diseased branches
  • Limbs growing over the roof, driveway or power lines
  • A crowded canopy that blocks light and airflow
  • A mango, lychee or other fruit tree that isn’t producing like it used to

An ISA Certified Arborist decides which cuts to make, whether that means thinning the canopy, raising low limbs to clear cars and walkways, or cleaning out deadwood. Our crews reach the canopy by climbing or with aerial lifts, and trees a truck can’t get to are handled with climbing gear and portable equipment. When the work is done, we clean up and haul away the debris, and tree waste is disposed of or recycled responsibly.

We take on jobs of every size across Oahu, including crown cleaning 3,954 trees in Waipio, Waipahu and West Loch. Read our top reasons to trim and prune your trees.

PALM TREE TRIMMING ON OAHU

Palm trees have a special place in Hawaii’s landscape, and they need different care than other trees. Our palm trimming is designed to keep each palm healthy and looking its best.

A proper trim removes dead and drooping fronds, along with coconuts and the flower and fruit stalks that pull energy from the tree. That matters for safety. Loose fronds get knocked down by high winds, and falling coconuts can injure people or damage property below. Palms that go untrimmed can also become a home for rats and insects.

We don’t over-trim. Cutting too many green fronds stresses a palm, so the crew takes what needs to go and leaves the healthy crown in place. Most coconut and royal palms on Oahu do well with a trim every 6 to 12 months, and palms over walkways, parking or pools may need it more often.

Each trim is also a chance to look for Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle damage, and we can treat for CRB on the same visit. Read more about the benefits of palm tree trimming.

TREE REMOVAL ON OAHU

Sometimes a tree has to come out. We remove trees that pose a risk to people and property or that stand in the way of development, and we do it safely, efficiently and with as little disturbance to the rest of the site as possible.

Common reasons to remove a tree:

  • It’s dead, or disease or damage has gone too far to save it
  • Cracks in the trunk, weak branch unions or a leaning trunk
  • Roots threatening a foundation, sidewalk or underground utilities
  • It’s too close to the house or power lines, or crowding out other trees

Before recommending removal, our arborists check whether pruning or treatment could save the tree. When removal is the right call, the crew plans each cut, lays protective materials over sensitive areas and brings the equipment the site needs, including climbing gear and portable machinery where a truck can’t reach. We’re fully licensed and insured, and we clean up when the job is done. Our crews also carry stump grinding equipment, so you don’t need a second contractor for the stump.

STUMP GRINDING & REMOVAL ON OAHU

An old stump is a tripping hazard and an eyesore, and it keeps you from using that part of your yard. We offer two ways to take care of it.

Stump grinding uses a machine to shred the visible part of the stump into wood chips. We grind up to 16 inches below grade, which removes the tripping hazard, lets you replant in the same area and stops most stumps from growing back. Grinding is quick and disturbs very little soil, but it leaves the roots in place, and a few species can still send up shoots from them.

Complete stump removal takes out the stump and its roots. It involves more digging and leaves a bigger hole, but it gives you a fully clear area for a new project with nothing left to sprout.

The right choice depends on what you plan to do with the space. Our crew looks at the stump’s size, location and species and recommends the method that fits, while protecting nearby plants and structures. Ground stumps often end up as mulch, so the wood gets reused. Read stump grinding vs. stump removal in Hawaii.

ROOT BARRIER INSTALLATION ON OAHU

Invasive tree roots can do real damage as they spread. They can crack foundations, damage sidewalks, interfere with plumbing and underground utilities, and leave the ground uneven.

Our root barrier installation protects your landscape and structures by guiding root growth away from the areas you want to keep safe. It’s a way to deal with a root problem without taking out the tree.

A root barrier makes sense when:

  • A tree is growing close to a house, wall or slab
  • Roots are reaching toward plumbing or utility lines
  • Sidewalks or paved areas are becoming uneven
  • You’re planting a new tree near a structure

Before recommending a barrier, one of our ISA Certified Arborists looks at the tree, its roots and the layout of the site. The barriers we install are durable and environmentally considerate, giving you long-term protection with minimal impact on the surrounding landscape. We install root barriers for homes and properties across Oahu.

CROWN REDUCTION ON OAHU

Crown reduction makes a tree’s canopy smaller while preserving its natural shape and structure. It’s a good option when a tree has outgrown its space and you’d rather keep it than take it down.

Common reasons to reduce a crown include limbs growing toward power lines or over a roof, a tree that has gotten too tall for its spot, and lowering the risk of storm damage before hurricane season.

The work takes careful planning. Our arborists choose which branches to shorten so the tree keeps a balanced, natural form, and we avoid cutting more than the tree can handle. Over-pruning stresses a tree and weakens the branch structure it needs to stand up to high winds. Done right, a reduction improves the tree’s health and longevity and lowers the hazards around it.

At Foster Botanical Garden, our team reduced the crown of a 130-foot Tattele tree to lessen the danger to visitors while keeping the tree in the garden. For more on reduction and other trimming methods, read tree trimming in Hawaii: a professional’s perspective.

CRB TREATMENT FOR PALMS ON OAHU

The Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) bores into the crown of a palm and feeds on the soft tissue where new fronds form. Left untreated, it can kill the tree. Signs to watch for:

  • V-shaped cuts in the fronds
  • Holes in the crown
  • Chewed or shredded fibers near the crown
  • Frass, a mix of plant debris and beetle waste

We treat CRB with trunk injection, an effective and environmentally responsible method. Using specialized tools, we place and seal the treatment directly into the trunk. The tree absorbs it quickly and carries it through its vascular system, giving systemic protection that reaches the beetles where they feed. Compared to conventional methods, trunk injection uses significantly less pesticide and limits environmental exposure. Depending on the product and the tree, protection can last up to a year.

By the time damage shows, a palm can be hard to save, so prevention works best. We offer quarterly, biannual and yearly treatment plans, and treatment can be added to your regular palm trimming. The photos show these injections in the field. For more detail, read our Vascular Injections for CRB blog.

LAND CLEARING ON OAHU

Before you can build, the land has to be ready. Our land clearing service prepares sites in Hawaii for development, on both small and large projects, while keeping the impact on the surrounding environment to a minimum.

We start by learning about your project and the land itself, then put together a clearing plan that can include:

  • Selective tree removal
  • Clearing brush and other vegetation
  • Stump and debris removal
  • Soil preparation for the next phase

We have the equipment to clear trees and vegetation on sites of any size, including a mulcher that turns cleared wood into wood chips you can reuse on the property. Our crews work on all kinds of terrain, from coastal lots to hillsides, and we coordinate with your project timeline and the other phases of construction. If a structure has to come down first, our demolition team can handle that too.

TREE PLANTING & TRANSPLANTING ON OAHU

We plant new trees and transplant existing ones with a focus on each tree’s health and on getting it well established in its new spot.

It starts with the right tree in the right place. Our ISA Certified Arborists can recommend species that will thrive in your yard’s conditions and help choose a location where the tree has room to grow. In Hawaii, that can also mean picking wind-resistant varieties.

Common reasons to plant or transplant:

  • Replacing a tree lost to removal or storm damage
  • New landscaping around a home or property
  • Moving an existing tree to a better location
  • Replanting where a stump has been ground out

Young trees need support while they settle in. Depending on the tree, that can mean staking for stability, mulch around the base to hold moisture, and deep watering without overwatering. We follow environmental best practices on every job, so your new trees add to a healthier, greener landscape. For more on protecting young trees, read our tips for preparing trees for hurricane season.

CROWN RESTORATION ON OAHU

Crown restoration is for trees that have been topped, cut back too hard or broken up in a storm. It redevelops the tree’s structure, form and appearance so it grows back into a more natural looking canopy.

Bad cuts and storm damage take a toll. Over-pruning stresses a tree, and in Hawaii’s humid climate, poor pruning can raise the risk of disease. A damaged crown may also lack the healthy branch structure a tree needs to hold up in high winds.

An ISA Certified Arborist first looks at what the tree has left to work with. The crew then prunes selectively to rebuild a stronger framework and a balanced canopy, which improves both the tree’s appearance and its structural integrity, including when the overall size of the canopy needs to come down. Sometimes the right pruning can save a tree that would otherwise be removed.

We’re also called in to fix trees after a trimming job done by someone else went wrong. To learn what good pruning looks like, read our pruning overview.

TREE DIAGNOSIS ON OAHU

When a tree starts to look off, finding the cause early gives you the best chance of saving it. Our tree diagnosis service identifies what’s affecting a tree’s health and what to do about it.

Signs worth having checked:

  • Yellowing or discolored leaves, or leaves dropping early
  • Holes in the bark or sawdust at the base
  • Unusual insect activity
  • A fruit tree producing less than usual

Hawaii’s warm, humid climate can be a breeding ground for tree diseases and pests, and many problems aren’t obvious to the untrained eye. Our certified arborist inspects the tree, pins down the cause and puts together a plant health care plan. Depending on the problem, that plan might include pruning out diseased branches, a treatment such as a trunk injection, or a fertilization plan, plus advice to head off future problems.

If a treatment is applied, let us know about pets or children on the property so we can tell you when the area is clear. We recommend an inspection at least once a year and after major storms. Read why arborist consultations matter for tree health.

Call 808-456-3311 to have one of our arborists take a look.

TREE RISK ASSESSMENT ON OAHU

A tree risk assessment finds hazards in a tree before they turn into an accident. Our assessments are done by arborists who hold the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification, including Operations Manager Tevita Tongotea.

Through a detailed inspection, we evaluate the tree’s health, its stability and the risk factors around it. We look for a split or cracked trunk, weak points where branches join, dead limbs, a lean or root damage, and at what sits underneath, such as a house, parking area, walkway or power lines.

Assessments are a smart step for:

  • Large trees over homes, driveways or common areas
  • Associations and property managers responsible for common-area trees
  • Construction or landscaping projects near existing trees
  • Trees that have come through a storm

You get clear recommendations, which may include pruning, treatment or removal. When you need it in writing, we can prepare a detailed arborist report covering each tree’s species, condition, hazards and options for managing the risk. Read when and why you might need an arborist report.

Call 808-456-3311 to schedule an assessment.

EMERGENCY TREE REMOVAL ON OAHU

When a tree comes down in a storm, or looks like it’s about to, you need help fast. Our emergency tree removal service handles trees that pose an immediate danger or have already fallen, and we respond swiftly to make the area safe.

Call us right away if you see:

  • A tree or large limb down on a house, car or road
  • A tree that is leaning or partly uprooted
  • Large broken limbs hanging in the canopy
  • A split or deeply cracked trunk

Until our crew arrives, keep everyone back from the tree and stay clear of any downed power lines. If it’s safe, take photos of the damage. We remove the hazard efficiently and with minimal impact to the surrounding area, clear the debris and help restore safety and order after the storm. We can also help with your insurance claim through damage assessments and documentation.

After a hurricane, our team removed an 80-foot African Tulip tree that had become a serious hazard at the Neal Blaisdell Center. Read what to do when a tree poses a danger.
